A Cold Day with Fog and Ice Crystals and a Sun Dog

It is cold today, with low temperatures and biting breeze that gives us the equivalent of minus 28. As I passed the river valley I noticed the fog and could see the ice crystals in the  air which look like tiny snow flakes and the air shimmers. The fog was exciting and the play on light created nice effects including a  sun dog. I am happy that I took the time to chase the rainbows.

Despite the beauty and wonder of the weather phenomena, the best part of the day was receiving a visit from friends from out of town whom I haven’t seen in a while.

  1. Beautiful photos, but what is a sun dog? The last photo? It is new to me. Have a wonderful holiday season, one of the merriest. I can see you are really enjoying it with your camera.

    • Thank you for your wishes. A sundog can be seen when high, thin cirrus clouds move in before a storm system (oh great). The sun’s rays are refracted through the ice crystals that make up these clouds and a prism of color can be seen on either side of the sun. The same thing happens at night when the moon is barely visible through the high clouds… it looks like a ring around the moon.Sun dogs, or mock suns, are technically called solar parhelia (parhelia meaning “with the sun”) and appear as bright bursts of light formed when sunlight passes through ice crystals at the proper angle.

Hi Jane, Great pictures, love the fog and composition of the first one, they all tell the story, OMG how cold is it? the star in the perfect circle with the sun dogs, great shot!! Love it! We seen some really nice sun dogs as we were leaving the city yesterday, but to much traffic to stop, anyway no camera, another great shot that got away. Our visit with Desi was a disaster, he was a mess, so we didn’t stay long.

    Merry Chtristmas Maxine

    • As you can see above, I looked up sundogs and could see the ice crystals everywhere in the air. It was -23 but -33 with windchill. Thank you so much for dropping in, enjoyed seeing all of you.Merry Christmas and keeping all in my prayers.
